Why Didn't I Think of That?

Good Morning.

There's a peculiar thing about a really good idea. Once someone has explained it to us, we can have trouble imagining why nobody thought of it sooner.

The solution seems so natural, so perfectly suited to the problem, that its originality almost disappears.

We may even find ourselves thinking, I could have come up with that.

Perhaps we could have. But there's an important difference between recognizing a good idea and producing one.

Psychologists have studied a related phenomenon known as hindsight bias, our tendency to believe an outcome was more predictable once we know what happened.

Knowing the answer changes how we see the question.

Before a solution exists, a problem may contain dozens of possibilities, most of which lead nowhere. We don't know which details deserve our attention or which assumptions are worth questioning. The person who eventually finds the answer has to work through that uncertainty.

Everyone who comes afterward gets to see the result.

And once we know the result, our minds have a remarkable ability to make it seem inevitable. We can follow the reasoning backward, noticing how neatly everything fits together. The difficulties that preceded the discovery become much harder to appreciate.

This creates an interesting problem for creativity.

Some of the most original ideas are immediately understandable. Their elegance makes them accessible, but that same quality can make the thinking behind them seem less impressive.

An idea that requires considerable explanation may appear sophisticated. One that can be understood in seconds risks being dismissed as obvious.

Yet simplicity can be extraordinarily difficult to achieve.

The person who comes up with an elegant solution often has to recognize something that others have overlooked. Once that connection has been made, it becomes available to everyone. The insight changes what we know, and with it, our sense of what should have been apparent all along.

This may explain why we sometimes underestimate creativity when we encounter it.

We judge an idea from the comfortable position of already knowing it. Its creator had no such advantage.

And perhaps one of the greatest compliments we can pay an original idea is also one of the easiest to misunderstand:

Of course. Why didn't I think of that?
