What Your Sleeping Brain May Reveal About Your Health
Good Morning.
Every night, the brain generates a complex pattern of electrical activity.
For decades, sleep specialists have used those signals to identify the familiar stages of sleep: light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep. Those categories have become the standard way of evaluating how we sleep.
Researchers now believe they may only tell part of the story.
In a new study, scientists trained an artificial intelligence system to analyze overnight brain-wave recordings in far greater detail. Rather than focusing only on broad sleep stages, the system detected subtle electrical patterns within them that traditional methods often overlook.
Those hidden patterns allowed the researchers to estimate a person's biological brain age from a single night's sleep. When the estimated brain age appeared older than a person's chronological age, it was associated with a higher future risk of neurological diseases, including dementia and Parkinson's disease.
The technology isn't intended to diagnose disease today. Instead, researchers believe it could become a new way to identify changes in brain health years before symptoms appear, opening the door to earlier monitoring and, potentially, earlier intervention.
Sleep has always been considered essential for brain health. This research suggests it may also provide one of the clearest windows into how the brain itself is aging.

Did You Know
When you sleep may matter as much as how long you sleep.
In a study of nearly 61,000 adults wearing sleep trackers, people with the most regular sleep schedules, going to bed and waking up at about the same time each day, had a 20 to 48% lower risk of early death than those with the most irregular schedules. Sleep regularity predicted survival even better than sleep duration.
