The Internet Made Expertise More Accessible and Confidence More Abundant

Good Morning.

There was a time when finding an expert was often harder than finding an answer.

If you wanted to understand investing, nutrition, photography, or history, you usually had to seek out someone who had spent years studying the subject. Information was relatively scarce, and expertise carried a certain weight because it was difficult to acquire.

Then the internet changed the equation.

Today, anyone can watch a lecture from a leading university, read scientific papers, compare viewpoints from around the world, or learn skills that once required a classroom. In many ways, access to knowledge has never been greater.

That's one of the internet's greatest achievements.

But something else happened at the same time.

The distance between learning about a subject and understanding it became much harder to see.

Reading ten articles can create the feeling of mastery. Watching several videos can make a topic seem familiar enough to explain. Familiarity is valuable, but it isn't the same as experience. Expertise is built not only by gathering information, but by testing ideas, making mistakes, recognizing exceptions, and discovering where simple answers stop working.

Ironically, many true experts become more cautious as they learn. Years spent studying a subject tend to reveal its complexity. They begin using phrases like, "It depends," or, "The evidence suggests," not because they know less, but because they understand how much uncertainty remains.

Confidence often follows a different path.

It can grow quickly because it asks less of us. Once we believe we've found the answer, curiosity naturally slows down.

The internet didn't create overconfidence. People have always mistaken familiarity for understanding.

What changed is the scale.

Never before have so many people had access to so much genuine knowledge. Never before has it been so easy to confuse information with expertise.

Perhaps one of the most valuable skills today isn't simply learning more.

It's staying curious long enough to remember how much there still is to learn.
